There is a Crack in Everything

“Ring the bells that still can ring
Forget your perfect offering
There is a crack in everything
That’s how the light gets in.”

– Leonard Cohen, Anthem lyrics

.

I didn’t have an idea

for how I would interpret

this challenge

I didn’t even know if

I would bother with this challenge

choose your battles

they say

but what happens when

the battles

aren’t interested in your choice

and choose you

instead

if you look really closely

(or perhaps not closely at all)

at the photograph

you might see a person screaming

a person made out of the streaks of congealed melted butter

that person

may be the soul of the butter which now is wasted

or of the dish

which was once going to hold a culinary creation

but then it broke and so it is useless

or the echo of the cry which

the person who experienced this dish cracking

while they were preparing a feast

emitted

when

it cracked during the prep stage

it wasn’t supposed to do that

it did do that

and it caused a moment of chaos

when it cracked and let the light in

or

of my silent

of joy as a broken dish gave me

a subject to photograph

and share

in the

meeting of a challenge

it wasn’t what was planned

even when nothing was

perhaps completely in place as a plan

but it’s better

that

way

.

“You can add up the parts
but you won’t have the sum
You can strike up the march,
there is no drum
Every heart, every heart
to love will come
but like a refugee.”

– Leonard Cohen, Anthem lyrics
