I do solemnly declare…

I do solemnly declare

that I

can only recall

five words

of the wedding vows

we spoke when

Stephen and I got married

20 years ago today

and the reason I recall

those words

they made me think of

an animal feeding trough

and we were pledging ours to the other

which seemed a bit weird

as neither of us had one

to offer the other

what we said when we

got married

was not important

we didn’t bother with personalised vows

nor a big ceremony

or even proper rings

we just

did it

alone together

in an office

with the official who officiates such things

a couple of friends

to witness our deed

and yes

our respective families

were not best pleased with us

but were not completely displeased

why we did it that way

reflects why we’ve done other things

the way we’ve done them

we’re two one of a kinds

who are very similar

and when you get the chance to meet

someone like you

you seal that deal

in your own way

we were not sure if we’d last

that wasn’t really relevant at the time

and after many years have gone

it still is not relevant

what is here

is still here

even though it has moved a lot

“You give but little when you give of your possessions.
It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.”
― Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

  1. Oh Jennifer and Stephen, what a beautiful accomplishment (these days). This is a wonderfully told story of the variety and capacity of love. James and I have only had 10 years, but if we start counting back in highschool when we first felt it, it’s more like 51 years. It took us until our 40th high school reunion to be able to feel it outloud! Don’t get me wrong. We are both glad we got past all those other, hard-lesson filled relationships so that what we bring to each other now is cleaner and healthier and way more yummy!

Happy New Year and Happy Anniversary!
