What is That doing There

copper-pot

.

The plant

sits in

a

copper pot

upon

a

rusting porthole

which rests upon

the top of

a

an old chimney

both repurposed to make

a table of sorts

and

these are reflected

along with a

secondhand hatstand

in

a mirror

framed with recycled wood

hanging upon a wall

made of clumped earth

taken from the garden

by those who built this house

a couple of

hundred years ago

this is

our

home

and every aspect of it

is welcome

and welcoming

even if it is rather odd

its oddness makes people

ask

why is that there

and

our answer is

because it is

happy

there

.

“The time will come
when, with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
and each will smile at the other’s welcome.”
― Derek Walcott
