The Corner of the Eye

.

I was staring intensely at the computer screen

not even a blink could break the spell

concentrating all my attention on one point

that I hadn’t noticed

the fact that I could no longer see anything

before me

then

out of the corner of my eye

movement alerted me to the world changing around me

a man appeared

on a roof

gingerly making his way from one end to the other

a tightrope walker

measuring the past

as each footstep took him forwards

my loss of focus

became fascinated by his focus

one wrong step

one fatal distraction

.

“I’ve got the guts to die. What I want to know is, have you got the guts to live?”
― Tennessee Williams, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
