When Things Happen

The other evening we had a power cut

this happens intermittently

regularly enough for us to have a system in place

to deal with it without too much fuss

Everything goes deeply quiet

in the house

in the surrounding countryside

and in those moments you realise how noisy power is

how much it hums

even when you think it is silent

While in the darkness and cold of Winter

it can be worrying to be without power

there is also something soothing about it

as it forces you to get in touch with

the primal nature within

“Things just happen in the right way, at the right time. At least when you let them, when you work with circumstances instead of saying, ‘This isn’t supposed to be happening this way,’ and trying harder to make it happen some other way.”
― Benjamin Hoff
